In the modern methodology of percussion instruments, the study of the drum occupies a role of primary importance. It is in fact the basic tool to begin to understand and learn the drumstick technique which will then, consequently, be applied to other percussion instruments. And it is also the instrument where one gets to know music in general, from rhythmic readings to rudiments, from the meaning of rhythm to the management of technique and dynamics. In the context of the study of drumset in particular, the primary study of the drum technique is strongly recommended, not only by the modern methodology but also by the strong role it assumes in the difficult management of the specific drumset technique, facilitating its learning.

  • The DRUM is undoubtedly the noble instrument of the family of percussion instruments. It was a heroic instrument as regards its use in the military context and has become a solo instrument as regards its use in literature Its first documented use dates back to 1332 when a guild of drum and fife players was founded in Basel (Switzerland) which was engaged in a Swiss mercenary regiment in the Battle of Sempach (Switzerland).
  • Its importance in giving signals for warfare, for marching and for field duties, it was subsequently used as a solo instrument in the orchestra by composers including Jean-Baptiste Lully, Gluck, Mozart. growing up, holding increasingly important roles, defining the first documented beats per drum dating back to 158 as “rudiments ” 9 in the publication “Orchesographie ” by Thoinot Arbeau and in 1627 in the publication “Torneo ” by Bonaventura Pistofilo, we can affirm that the practice of “rudiments ” necessary to perform the beats of ordinance was born in France and in Italy.
  • Notation used by Arbeau and Pistofilo was similar: the syllables PA and TA were used. In various ordinances of the kings of France, that of 1754 of King Louis XVI was of great importance for the drum. The precise instructions concerned how to adjust the drum, how to hold the drumsticks, how to move the arms and wrists, and how to strike while respecting the dynamics of the “piano” and “forte”. The syllables TA, PA and BA DA indicated the strong and soft blows. The syllable PLA referred to the flam.
  • “THE YOUNG DRUMMERS ASSISTANT ” publisher Longman & Broderip, London, 1780. 11 “rudiments ” are indicated. The writing is on three lines of the staff: on the top line the left hand is indicated, on the one below the right, and on the middle one the final note of the reels. In this publication the song THREE CAMP REVEILLE played for the alarm clock in the English military camp appears for the first time.
  • Finally ” BATTERIES HELVETIQUE ” is the title of the Ordinance of 1799 published in three languages, where a concise method is described drumming with precise instructions and references to a musical notation. Flam, coup de charge, the reel and various strokes are indicated.
  • The centrality of the drum in Europe is clearly consolidated.
  • (For a complete view of the events, consult the Chronology with fundamental and relevant stages and events concerning the drum in Europe, U.S.A. up to the whole of 1800)

TECHNIQUE (TECHNICAL AND DYNAMIC METHOD)

THE STUDY OF THE DRUM INCLUDES THE 8 POINTS LISTED HERE. THE LESSONS ADDRESS THE VARIOUS POINTS THAT ARE CONSEQUENTIAL AND PROPEDEUTICAL IN THE ORDER (FROM 1 TO 8). EACH POINT IS VERIFIED IF IT IS APPROPRIATELY ADEQUATE AND CORRECT. PROPEDEUTICS IS BASIC. IN THIS WAY TEACHING ERRORS DO NOT OCCUR. FOR EXAMPLE IT IS NOT APPROPRIATE TO GO VERY FORWARD WITH THE STUDY OF THE DIVISION IF THE STICKS ARE NOT HANDLED CORRECTLY. A RHYTHMIC PHRASE IS VERY HIGH. AND THIS IS NOT GOOD. IN THE LIVE LESSON THE STUDY TIMES

OUTSIDE THE LESSONS ARE RECOMMENDED. THIS IS A FUNDAMENTAL FACTOR FOR PROGRESSING IN STUDY AND IT IS VARIABLE FOR EACH STUDENT. HIS TIMES. EVERY MUSICIAN IS DIFFERENT FROM ANOTHER. LEARNING TIMES ARE RELATED TO VARIOUS FACTORS. THE MOST IMPORTANT CONCERNS THE AMOUNT OF TIME TO DEDICATE TO STUDY. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE TIME NECESSARY TO HAVE EVEN A MINIMUM OF RESULTS, THEN IT'S BETTER TO STAY AWAY FROM THE MUSIC.
